FRINGE FESTIVAL REVIEWS

"The Sugar Daddy Project"

Jaime Kleiman's feminism-in-a-tight-dress show is a biting satire that takes on The Man with original music, dance and a blow-up doll. It's a cunning combination of eye candy and anarchy that would wear its lefty politics on its sleeve if had any sleeves to begin with.

The energetic and attractive young cast dares you to ogle, even as they challenge you to think "I hate the patriarchy," one young woman coos, "but I love men." Well-studied and well-articulated, it's that rare political show that doesn't take itself too seriously and is all the funnier and all the more impressive for it.

The Star Tribune's Carolyn Petrie writes:

"Sex, love and relationships are a tit-for-tat business in this bawdy cabaret. Using a cast of supremely nubile 20-something women and a few comically inclined men, writer-director Jaime Kleiman explores the postmodern-feminist idea that every coupling is exploitative in its own way. Flip, hip and sexed-up, the show tries too hard at times like a teenager smoking to impress the cool kids. But the talented cast is fun to watch, and Kleiman's in-your-face perspective could spark some lively conversation." (4 Aug. 2003)

A light-hearted exploration of relationships, sex, and gender politics, THE SUGAR DADDY PROJECT is a dance-theatre show with great tunes ranging from Nina Simone to Tom Waits to local luminary Pablo, words you can't say on television, and the flashiest kick line this side of the Mississippi!
